In this app, children will learn about all of the vowel-r digraphs (commonly called r-controlled vowels) and practice reading them in high frequency words. We start with “ar” because it is fairly regular, very common, and by far the primary way to spell the sound combination /ar/. We then teach the three most common spellings for /er/ at the same time ("er", "ir", and "ur") because they are all very common in high frequency words. Teaching these together makes it clear that these are all the same sound. Next we teach "or" and "ore" together because "ore" is more common at the end of words and "or" is the most common way to spell this sound combination in the middle of words. Each letter team is introduced individually in a fun video followed by the opportunity to read and write words with that sound. Then children choose the letter team or teams that can represent each isolated sound followed by selecting the team or teams that can spell the missing sound in words, which develops both reading and spelling skills. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is for children to learn to read with this method! This app goes on to teach the "war" and "wor" chunks (warm, worm), the three sounds/sounds combinations "ear" can spell (hear, bear, learn), and five ways to spell /air/ (hair, care, bear, berry, carry). We also teach common words with "oar", "our", and "oor" as /or/ (roar, four, door). High-frequency true sight words with vowel-r sounds are also taught (are, were, where, etc.).
We have 18 vowel sounds but only five vowel letters plus the letter "y". Most vowel sounds can be spelled in multiple ways including by vowel teams (digraphs). Reading failure (dyslexia) occurs when children are not able to figure out this complicated system that even most adults don’t fully understand, so they resort to ineffective strategies. Children don’t need to struggle and fail! The Sounds Have Letter Teams apps make this complicated system very clear, easy, and quick to learn.
